What is Tretinoin?
Tretinoin is a form of Vitamin A (known as retinoic acid). Tretinoin is a common component of many anti wrinkle creams. It”s one of the first successful ingredients. Unfortunately, tretinoin can cause serious side effects in high concentrations.
What does it do?
The main activity of Tretinoin is that it serves as an exfoliant, literally dissolving the upper dead layers of the skin to reveal the living, youthful cells below. The second main activity of tretinoin is when retinoic acid is absorbed by the skin cells, it is converted into retinol which is both an antioxidant and a nutrient useful to the cells.
High concentrations of tretinoin can lead to irritation, redness, swelling, peeling and other side effects. Also, tretinoin creates extreme sensitivity to sunlight on areas of the skin where it is applied. Therefore, care has to be taken when going into sunlight when using Tretinoin due to the fact that it can cause scars.
Is Tretinoin effective for reducing wrinkles?
Yes. Tretinoin has been tested over and over and is an effective ingredients. We suggest that you rather choose products containing retinol or retinyl palmitate instead.
